label inserted in the borrowed shirts

Wildgroei Wulkgroei

performance

20 min.

2023

Wildgroei refers to a phenomenon that happens to whelks (wulken) after they become infertile because of a parasite. The snail can no longer become sexually mature. Because of this the hormone that should stop the shell from growing is not produced and the shells grow much bigger than they normally do.

In fashion something tricked us into thinking that we need more and more clothes every season. In many cases more than we can actually wear.

In this performance I put on 23 shirts which are laying on the floor in the shape of a spiral, inspired by the growing whelk, and take them off again. The shirts are borrowed from friends and family, after having asked if they had some shirts they could spare for a few weeks.

Performed during the opening of ‘Bobbi’s Summer School: From Time to Time’ at 38cc, Delft, July 2023
